What is sports massage?
Whilst the primary focus of sport massage is to reduce muscle stress and tension which has been brought about by physical activity, it is also a great way to reduce muscle soreness and imbalance in people whose livestyles cause muscular imbalances, such as office workers. On the sports side, when exercising over a period of time, the overuse of a muscle can cause it become tight. The tightening of the muscles can cause pain and restrict range of motion when exercising. The tightening of a muscle(s) can trigger a chain reaction throughout the body which can then lead to muscle imbalances and weakening of muscle tissue. For example, if you have pain down the outside of your leg, this could be due to tightness of the Tensor Fascia Latae and Gluteus Maximus, these muscles join to the same tendon to form the IT band. The pain then causes you to use your opposite leg more often, for instance putting all your weight through your pain free leg when standing up and sitting down. However overtime, if not treated, the muscle becomes both tight and weak due to the inactivation of the muscle, therefore creating a muscle imbalance. Sports massage helps loosen tight muscles and is a useful preventative strategy to stop this from happening.
The benefits of sports massage?
The great thing about sports massage is it is not just beneficial for those who participate in sports. Whether you are a recreational gym-goer or do not attend a gym at all, sports massage can still benefit you. Originally, sports massage was used as a preventative strategy for injuries and also as a rehabilitative technique when recovering from a sporting injury. There are few things worse than getting an injury and so sports massage helps contribute to staying injury free when training. If you are unlucky enough to be injured, sports massage can help alleviate pain. During a massage the body releases endorphins that come from pain relieving aspects of the brain, therefore stimulating a natural pain relief response. If you are involved in physical activity regularly, I’m sure you will be very aware of the term DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness). Sports massage has the capability of preventing and relieving DOMS which can, at times, be very painful. When a job demands you to be in a certain position for a lengthy period of time, for instance working in an office where you are at a computer all day, muscles that are constantly inactive eventually become tight due to the restricted movement. This can become very frustrating and also very painful. Massage can help to loosen the muscles that have tightened up and help elongate the fibres, therefore reducing and even eliminating the pain and discomfort.
